Translation and publication of disks containing exhaustive automobile information
Three years ago a major automobile manufacturer set us a task: to arrange the translation and publication of disks containing exhaustive automobile information, including:
- primary model characteristics;
- body repair guide
- automobile repair guide
- electrical circuit diagram
Such a disk contains 1500-2500 pages of information, sometimes more. The technology of working with such disks was completely new to us, and had nothing in common with previous translation orders.
With the help of a special tool provided us by the customer’s programmer and fine-tuned somewhat by ourselves, the entire text, submitted in the form of several hundred files, was transformed into translation-friendly files. Image captions were processed in another way. Upon completion of the translation and editing, a reverse operation was begun to restore everything to its original appearance. Illustrations were edited in a graphic editor, after which the prepared Russian text, along with all illustrations, was checked for final conformity to the original.
Alongside the translation, a project glossary was being actively compiled, requiring a serious examination of the wishes and requirements of the customer. The results of this painstaking work was the creation of not only a glossary, but also a special document describing in detail the requirements for translating the project’s documentation: abbreviations, grammatical forms for heading translation, a list of certain specific expressions, and much more besides. The documents created at the primary stage now permit considerable time savings when new specialists are enlisted for the project: upon beginning work, they receive all the necessary information and are spared the necessity of seeking it out on the Internet, poring over reference books, and coming up with things on their own.
The first disk was followed by many others. The end result was that the customer received disks with all the necessary information for mechanics on each automobile model produced. Currently we are engaged in translating new editions of the materials we created.
